IPS LCD

Liquid-crystal display with in-plane switching for good color and viewing angles, lit by a backlight.

Also known as: IPS IPS display LCD IPS

Full Definition & Technical Explanation

IPS LCD is a liquid-crystal technology with a backlight. Compared to OLED it is cheaper, brighter in direct sun on budget devices, and immune to burn-in. IPS also beats TN and VA panels on color and viewing angles.

It cannot show true black (the backlight leaks) and contrast is lower. Budget phones, tablets, and many laptops still use IPS. See Type: IPS LCD and sRGB color space: 100% in specs.
