static contrast

The ratio between the brightest white and darkest black a display can show at the same time.

Full Definition & Technical Explanation

Static contrast (native contrast) is the ratio of a display's brightest white to its darkest black measured simultaneously on the same screen. It reflects a panel's true ability to separate light and dark.

Unlike dynamic contrast, it cannot be inflated by dimming tricks. Emissive panels such as OLED achieve very high static contrast.
